Tea made from the yellow dock plant is popular for many different reasons, including its various therapeutic properties. Yellow dock tea has been shown to have an effective in cleansing the blood and liver, and is also helpful for its laxative effects. For these reasons, it is most frequently used by those that are undertaking some sort of detoxification program. Coming from the yellow dock plant, which is a flowering herb that grows to a height of four feet, the tea is made from the leaves. These leaves are reddish-brown in color, and shoot up from the ground in a spiraled, curvy shape. An alternate name for the yellow dock plant is "curly dock," as a result of this unique shape of the leaves.

Growing naturally throughout Africa, the United States, and parts of Europe, the yellow dock plant grows in dumps, ditches, roadsides, or other places of waste, drawn by the moist soil in areas like this. To make yellow dock tea, the leaves can be boiled and steeped. However, the tea is more frequently composed of the roots and other submerged parts of the plant, which are rich in nutrients and minerals from the soil in which it grows. A typically seen preparation of the tea is to take about two teaspoons of the root and steep it in a cup of boiling water for ten minutes. It's not recommended to have more than three cups per day, due to the laxative effect.

In addition to promoting bowel movements and assisting with the overall digestive process in the body, yellow dock tea is also helpful for a number of other reasons. It may help increase the secretion of bile in the body, eliminates heavy metals, and cleanses the blood and liver. Some say that it is also useful for cleansing the skin externally, clearing up acne, eczema, and other conditions like this. That may be due to the overall detoxifying effect that the plant has, which leads to purer, clearer skin, eyes and hair as a result.

As with any tea that exhibits a laxative effect, it's important to take yellow dock tea in moderation. During its use, one should not exceed three cups per day, and it is not suitable for ongoing use, as this could cause dehydration over time. However, as part of a detoxification program, it could be quite beneficial. Experts also recommend that you ask your doctor before ingesting this tea during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
